1. Know Your Target Audience

Build your keyword strategy around your target audience above all. It doesn’t matter how much traffic another phrase may receive. Ignore another keyword’s click through rate is if it attracts the wrong audience.

Start by building customer personas that outline things like:

  • Demographics
  • Goals
  • Challenges
  • Interests
  • Where they spend time online/ offline
  • What sources they trust
  • Education level
  • Cultural/Language references

A small business should have at least 5-10 distinct personas to target. Build content around these personas along with the related keyword strategy for that content.

When you focus on a specific persona, you use keywords that are very relevant to your target.

If you’re a medical job placement service, then a phrase like “find nursing jobs” will likely be very relevant to your “Nurse” persona. If you choose to segment your nurse audience into more specialized personas, then “Nursing jobs in Endocrinology” is even more relevant.

This same keyword is much less relevant to a physician seeking job placement services. Even if they are an Endocrinologist, they wouldn’t search for or click on a keyword that targets nurses.

If you’re a designer brand, having words like the following would not only send mixed messages. They could harm the viability of your brand:

  • Locally grown

Always consider how the keywords you use — or don’t use — reflect your brand message.

4. Do a Competitor Analysis

  1. It takes inventory of your competition.

  2. Pull the words up in a Google search. If you’re a local business, leave Google’s local search option on. If you’re eComm or a national services company, turn local search off.
  3. Copy the URLs (web addresses) of the top 3 websites. Do this for each keyword you want to research.
  4. Enter those addresses into an analytics tool of your choice.
  5. Find out their website authority. This is an estimate of how authoritative Google thinks their site is. To compete with them, you’ll need to put a keyword strategy that raises your website’s authority as well.
  6. Find out what their top-performing pages are.
  7. Find out what keywords they’re targeting.
  8. Review their top performing content to better understand what kind of content you need to compete with them.

Make note of things like:

  • Content length
  • Topics covered
  • Multi-media
  • How they are applying their keyword strategy
  • Publishing frequency

Learn more about what your own strategy should look like. These tools are geared toward SEO. But they can be used to learn more about competitor strategies for PPC and social media marketing as well.

If you don’t have access to tools like these because they’re cost prohibitive, complete this manually. It will take more time. But don’t not do it. One of the great things about working with a digital marketing company is that they can spread the cost of these tools across their many clients, making them much more financially sensible.

Follow the same basic steps to do this manually. Use a free keyword density tool to see what words a specific page is targeting. Find out the authority of a website by using Moz free website explorer tool. Explore the content on the site manually to learn more about what they do.

Ongoing Competitor Analysis

Some say communication is the key to success in business and in life. We don’t disagree. But adaptation runs a close second. A keyword strategy will stagnate if you’re not continually tracking how the competitive landscape is changing.

You can use analytics tools to:

  • Directly monitor how certain competitors are performing.
  • See whose rising or falling in rank for keywords you’re targeting.
  • Watch your own rank in Google rise and fall for specific keywords.

In most cases, if your rank is falling, someone is stepping in to take your spot. Reduced traffic and conversion, as well as increased advertising costs, will follow if it goes unaddressed.

Stay a step ahead of your competition by monitoring what they’re up to.

5. Align Keywords to the Buyer’s Journey

Each potential customers goes through a buyer’s journey. It includes 4 crucial steps.

  • Best denture dentist
  • How much do dentures cost

Note the subtle differences. Each of these suggests that the person is more aware of the problem. They’re evaluating best solutions.

Your consideration keywords may also include words that encourage a person to by now like:

  • Teeth whitening discounts
  • Financing for braces


In this stage, people are ready to buy now. High intention keywords reflect that.

  • Schedule a teeth cleaning
  • Buy teeth whitening kit
  • Where to get Biohorizon dental implants

Create a high intention landing page that makes it easy for this person schedule or buy now and you can convert this traffic easily. We’ll discuss how to do that in the “landing page” section below.

6. Getting Your Tools and Talent In Place

Planning a keyword strategy is one thing. Executing it consistently and successfully is something else entirely. This takes people and tools. Consider the tools and work hours needed to execute the strategy effectively. Budget for each of these areas to be successful.

This includes at it’s very basic:

  • Research
  • Planning
  • Content creation
  • Content publishing
  • Content distribution
  • Content maintenance
  • Website design and maintenance
  • Analytics

Part of building a strategy is knowing who is responsible for what and how you’ll get it done.

7. Build Your Keyword List

At this point, it’s time to start applying our prep work above to build a list of keywords for a website. The words you choose here should build on the areas we’ve discussed:

  • Target
  • Goals & Objectives
  • Message / Branding
  • Buyer’s Journey
  • Competitor Landscape

Each word you add to your list should align with these 5 elements. You can find many free keyword planners online. Or you can use paid tools like the ones already mentioned. They give you greater insights with less work.

Moz Keyword Explorer is a great free tool.

It tells you:

  • How much traffic a word gets
  • What percentage of clicks are from the organic search results
  • How difficult it is to compete for this keyword
  • Similar keywords to consider
  • Top national competitors for that keyword
  • The estimated authority of the top competitors

Let’s walk through an example to see what makes a great keyword?

You’re an HVAC company. Is “air conditioner repair” is a good keyword to target?

The volume for this keyword is high. That’s a check in the pro column.

The difficulty is 38 out of 100. This number describes how easy it is for a quality site to move up in the ranks. In other words, low difficulty means that a great site could come in a blow everyone else out of the water.

Your website may or may not be that amazing site right now. But that’s why we’re here.

To really understand how hard it will be to get onto page 1 in Google searches, look at the DA (domain authority) for the top 3 sites. Compare this to your own domain authority. You can check your domain authority in another free tool, Moz Site Explorer.

If their DA’s are much higher than yours, it will be harder to compete with them. But that doesn’t mean you disregard this keyword entirely. You just need to gain some leverage.

You’ll do this by doing two things.

First, choose a long tail keyword that includes this keyword as your keyword to target. That might be:

  • Air conditioner repair costs
  • Air conditioner repair near me
  • Troubleshooting air conditioner repair

Doing so allows you to begin building your authority for that keyword without just sitting there waiting for your authority to go up. That never works.

Second, use LSI keywords. LSI (latent semantic indexing) is a complicated way to say, use other words that support your keyword. When you do, it makes your content appear more in-depth.

Strategies like this allow this to happen.

This is a screenshot from Google search results. It looks a little different because we’re using a free plugin called MozBar. It’s available for the Chrome browser and very helpful for competitor analysis.

Notice the DA of the top 3 organic results. A website with a 21 DA has the #1 spot. Websites with higher estimated authority of 94 and 86 DA should be able to beat that 21 DA. But they sit in second and third positions.

Building the right content around your keywords can make this happen. Let’s go there next as we continue to look at actionable steps to apply a keyword strategy to your website.

8. Align Landing Pages with Keywords

We’re using landing pages here very loosely. Any page a person lands on when they click on a search result is a landing page. It may not hold the same prestige as a Google Ads landing page that earns high conversions. But it’s role of generating awareness and trust while furthering the buyer’s journey is equally important.

This might be a sales page, pricing page, or a blog article.

In whichever case, what they see on that page influences their interaction with your site and brand. Make it appear instantly relevant. Otherwise, you might see these scenarios.

The person used a high intention keyword. They’re ready to buy. you greet them with exhaustive information for consideration before you get to the CTA. You may lose them.

A searcher enters a search query that included the word “sale”. The page they are taken to after clicking does not take them to a products page. They leave.

Not only did you miss out on a potential conversion. These instant departures add up. Search engines like Google track these “back button escapes”. In their eyes, you’re not providing a great user experience.

It’s not because your site is slow or not mobile friendly. It’s because you encouraged someone to click on your webpage only to lead them to a page that isn’t what they expected.

The result will be reduced visibility in searches, both organic and ads. If it continues you may even become invisible in searches for that keyword. The impact is far reaching as this can impact the overall trustworthiness of your website. If Google sees you as untrustworthy, it will be harder to rank on any keywords.

Make sure all images, topics, language and text continue that visitor’s journey. A person should instantly know they’ve clicked the right link. The page should align with their:

  • Persona
  • Where the customer is in the buyer’s journey
  • Your business goals for that content

The page should encourage them to linger in order to learn more about your brand. Or it should get them to click on other things on your website. This makes you appear highly relevant and deserving of premium visibility in search results.

9. Track Performance & Optimize for Results

Don’t forget that your keyword strategy should keep up with your content strategy. And since content needs to be updated regularly, you also should track your keyword performance to better improve your keyword list. Update the keywords that you use if you find that they are low in conversions. Or maybe add a few more long tail keywords in your existing content.

No keyword strategy is complete until you have a system in place to track performance. Know what you need to measure and how you’ll measure it. As you measure your results, you find that some keywords and content perform better than others. Study these to learn more about why they perform so well.

Make more like them.

What to Measure

At first, it may be difficult to analyze every metric you need to. But don’t let this stop you from measuring what you can. As you learn more about applying your strategy, you’ll be able to expand the measures your track. In the process, you’ll set new smart goals that will help you know if you, your team and business are on track.

Here are some key questions that data will answer for you. In most cases, these can be tracked in either Google Analytics (GA) or Google Search Console (GSC) Both are free.

Are you being seen? Track unique visitors, sessions, page views, etc. (GA)

Are your keywords and the associated landing pages relevant and high quality? And you are attracting the intended audience? Track bounce rate, duration and number of pages visited. (GA)

Are your keywords and the associated landing pages leading to conversions? Track conversion rate. Map pathways through your site to find out where people may be getting stuck. It may be your checkout process or contact form rather than your keywords reducing conversion rate. (GA)

Is your keyword strategy improving your rankings for targeted words in search results? Use a tool like ProRankTracker or Serpbook, which have free versions available. Tools like these track your position in search results each day so you always know how visible your website is for a specific keyword.

Which keywords are driving traffic to your website? Which keywords are causing impressions without a click? View this in search console.

What pages are getting the most traffic? View this in Google Analytics.

These are a lot of the questions floating around Instagram Stories since they are still relatively new (and rolling out with their own set of updates frequently!).

How Instagram Stories Work

Before diving into the benefits of Instagram Stories for business, let’s first learn more about what they are and how they work.

When you click to watch someone’s Story, it will show either a photo or a video that they’ve posted. If it’s a photo, it will generally show for about 5 seconds; if it’s a video, it will show for a maximum of 15 seconds. All content remains on stories for 24 hours unless deleted earlier by the user that posted it.

For the most part, these photos and videos are taken with the Instagram camera, but you can also upload content from your camera roll so long as the content has only been on your camera roll for 24 hours or less.

The other piece of content you can publish on Instagram Stories, outside of traditional photos and videos, is a Boomerang.

A Boomerang is a short, soundless video that plays forwards and backwards on repeat. Cool snippets of content can be made with this feature such as pouring a drink into a cup (and then seeing the drink fly back into the cup in reverse).

Add Links to your Instagram Stories

If you have a verified Instagram account or you have more than 10,000 followers, then you can add links to your Instagram stories.

Here’s how you can add links on your stories:

  1. When adding Instagram story, click the link icon.
  2. Copy the link of the web page you want to link your story to go to.
  3. Paste the link into the link field.
  4. Click done and publish your story.

Since IG stories are only visible for 24 hours, it’s best to put links for your timely or one off promotions such as products offered for a limited time only.

Now that you know how Instagram Stories work, let’s talk about how to use them to your advantage!

Instagram Stories is now a new placement on which you can advertise.

Advertisers can upload photos, videos and Boomerangs, and they can apply any of the fun custom tools mentioned above!

And these are the different calls to action you can utilize with Instagram Story ads: Apply Now, Book Now, Buy Tickets, Contact Us, Download, Learn More, Shop Now, Sign Up, Watch More

It’s important to choose your Instagram Story ad objective carefully; you want to choose the objective that best describes the action you’re looking for. The reason for this is that Facebook and Instagram will show the ad to people within the target audience you’ve selected who are likely to perform that action.

This means that if you select Traffic, the ad will be shown to people within your target audience who are just likely to click. Whereas an ad under the Conversion objective will be shown to people within your target audience who are likely to click and convert.

When we analyze our new clients’ accounts to see the work they or other marketing companies have done in the past, this is often a common mistake that we find.

Choosing the right objective can make all of the difference in your ad campaign.

Because of this, advertisers were so pleased to see all of the different objective and call to action options when Instagram Stories ads rolled out. It gives businesses a chance to pursue the exact results they are looking for.

Just like organic Instagram Stories, these ads disappear after 24 hours. When we talk about organic content, we mean posts or Stories that are not sponsored with advertising dollars.

Instagram Story Highlights is a feature that has a section all on its own on your profile: below your bio and above your newsfeed.

Instagram Story Highlights are individual, stand alone Stories comprised by you, and they remain in the Highlights section permanently until you delete them.

To post on Highlights, you first have to start using Instagram Stories because you can only upload past Stories from December 2017 onward to your Highlights section (this is because December 2017 was when the Highlights feature rolled out).

To make sure you don’t lose any valuable Stories that you’ve posted in the past, you can always turn on your “Auto-Archive” feature in Settings to make sure you’re automatically saving every Instagram Story you post.

When someone clicks to your Instagram profile, Highlights are often what they click through first, so make sure they represent what your business is all about!

One way to do this is to unify all of your Highlight thumbnail images with branded photos like the image shown previously and down below!

You might have heard some buzz about the latest Instagram marketing trend – Instagram pods. You may have been asked to join an Instagram pod. Or maybe you’re even actively participating in one now.

Since Instagram changed their algorithm, many businesses have not been getting the visibility they hoped for among their follower base. As a result, Instagram pods came about as a way for businesses to work the algorithm in their favor to improve visibility. But do they really work? And can “gaming the system” end up negatively impacting your business?

When new trends come about in the social media marketing world, it’s important to understand how they work before you participate. No matter what your experience with Instagram pods, it’s vital that you get to know what they are and how they work so that you can make an educated decision about using them for your brand.

That’s why we’ve put together some information below about what an Instagram pod is and how it can impact your business. (Spoiler Alert: We don’t think that they are the best investment for small businesses. We’ll explain why below to help you make the best decision for your brand.)

What is an Instagram Pod?

Changes to the Instagram algorithm have reduced visibility for many businesses. Instagram’s goal was to update its algorithm to provide a better experience for its users. The social media platform wants to show users more of what they care about in their feed. However, these changes have also made it harder for businesses to be seen by their followers.

The new Instagram algorithm makes it so that users no longer see posts chronologically in their feeds. Instead, the content that a user sees in his or her feed is based on engagement. Posts with more likes, shares, comments, views, saves, etc. signal to Instagram that the content is high-quality and something that more viewers might like to see.

In addition to rewarding those posts with higher levels of engagement, the Instagram algorithm also takes into consideration the timeliness of the post and the user’s relationship to the person posting. When this algorithm change came about, many businesses found that their followers were just not seeing their content on a regular basis, which caused a decline in engagement and conversions for many businesses that use Instagram for marketing.

That’s why Instagram pods were born. An Instagram pod is a group of like-minded business owners who connect with one another and engage with each other’s posts. Instagrammers get together in a group and agree to work with one another to increase their account’s engagement on Instagram. Typically, the pod members will communicate through direct message (DM). However, some Instagram pods will create a private Facebook group. This is how pod members let each other know when they have a new post.

When a pod member tells the group that they’ve posted new content, everyone else in the group will visit the post and engage with it by liking the post and leaving a comment. The hope here is that this “genuine” engagement will signal to Instagram that the post is quality content. And Instagram will push the content out more widely into the brand’s users’ feeds.

Some Instagram pods are small, but others can become quite large. The larger the group, the more potential for increased engagement. However, larger groups can also have issues with people who join but are not invested in helping other members. For instance, they will benefit from the comments and likes on their own content but may neglect to engage with others’ content.

Many Instagram users will also participate in multiple Instagram pods. Though this does significantly improve your potential for engagement, it also requires you to do double the work in engaging with others’ posts. This can become quite time consuming and detract users from focusing on important tasks like developing great content.

Members of Instagram pods will often share or link to their new posts in direct messages, making it easy for other members to view, like, and comment on their content.

Do Instagram Pods really help increase engagement?

So now that you know what an Instagram pod is and how it works, let’s talk about whether or not it actually helps increase engagement for your account. Though these groups were created with the goal of increasing genuine engagement on posts, this engagement doesn’t always help in the way that it was designed to.

The Instagram algorithm looks at more than just overall engagement when deciding which post content will be shown on users feeds. The algorithm also takes into account which Instagram accounts the specific user engages with when deciding which content to show them. This means that even if a post becomes super popular on your page, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be shown to all of your followers.

For example, let’s say that you create an Instagram post about a new product you’ve just launched. You get a significant amount of likes and comments on the post. However, there are still going to be followers who will never see this post in their feed. This is because no matter how much engagement occurs on this particular post, the users who don’t regularly engage with your content are not likely to see it.

With this in mind, Instagram pods are not necessarily helping you increase your visibility and reach the Instagram users who don’t usually see your content. Though you will have increased engagement to a certain extent, this engagement does not magically put your content in front of all of your users.

So do Instagram pods help you increase engagement? Well, yes and no. You are increasing engagement on your posts. However, you are engaging with the users in your Instagram pod group, not potential leads and customers. Essentially, you are spending time building engagement with users that have no plans to purchase your products or become brand advocates.

It’s also important to mention that Instagram pod engagement only really works if the other members in your groups share a similar target audience. If you engage with users who don’t have a similar target audience, then you’re signaling to Instagram that your content is relevant to a different audience than the one you are trying to target.

And if attracting a targeted audience is your goal, which probably is, then Instagram pods will not be a big help to you. Most Instagram pods are made up of users who are in the same niche and market as you are. And probably some of your competitors are in there too.

This raises the question, is this engagement really worth it? For the most part, small businesses can benefit more from focusing on engaging with their actual target market rather than spending time generating irrelevant engagement from other Instagram pod group members. Instead of trying to find a way around the Instagram algorithm, you may instead want to invest in finding ways to engage the users who are most likely to be interested in your products.

Instead of spending your time on Instagram pods, you could spend your time creating more engaging content for your target market.

Instagram Pod: Why We Don’t Recommend Joining One

Though Instagram pods may work for some brands, we don’t recommend that small businesses use this strategy as part of their social media marketing. Here are just a few reasons why this strategy isn’t effective for most small businesses:

1. Instagram Pods are time consuming.

When you take part in an Instagram pod, you aren’t just reaping the benefits of free engagement. You also have to engage with other users content. This can be quite time consuming. Rather than focusing on creating new quality content or engaging with your leads and customers, you have to spend time engaging with the content that the other pod group users are creating.

Not to mention, if you want Instagram pods to work for you, you typically have to take part in large pod groups or more than one pod. Otherwise, the engagement that you get may be minimal, having very little impact on your engagement rates. The larger your pod group and the more pods you participate in, the more time you will have to spend engaging with other pod members’ content.

It’s also important to consider how the time spent on participating in these Instagram pods will impact your actual content. The more time you spend liking and commenting on other pod members’ content, the less time you have to spend developing quality Instagram content. If your Instagram content starts to suffer due to the time constraints, you may end up losing some of your followers who are actually interested in your brand and products.

2. The engagement you get from pods is ingenuine.

The goal of an Instagram pod is to increase genuine engagement rates. However, this engagement is based on an agreement that you’ve made with other users. These users are not necessarily interested in your brand, content, or products. They will not become your customers. Therefore this engagement is, for the most part, ingenuine.

Though engagement from Instagram pods may appear genuine to Instagram and its algorithm, the truth is that this engagement results in inflated engagement rates. It will not give your business an accurate idea of how your target audience engages with your content. And it can actually end up hurting your advertising efforts.

For example, if your business invests in Instagram ads, you will be targeting those users who are most likely to be interested in your products. This is based on those users who are currently engaging with your content. This means that if the other pod members engaging with your content are not similar to your target market, you may be spending money on advertising to users who are not a good fit for your brand.

Again, we recommend investing your time in directly engaging with your target audience. Genuine engagement is that which inspires users to like or comment on your content because it is actually engaging. Rather than spending time building engagement with users who are not going to buy from your brand, you can spend your time and resources developing content that your followers actually find valuable. This is the best way to build the kind of relationships that lead to sales and even brand loyalty.

3. They don’t account for all algorithm changes.

As we mentioned before, the Instagram pod does not account for all of the algorithm changes that Instagram has made since 2016. Though general engagement plays a role in helping Instagram decide what is quality content, the algorithm also takes into consideration what actual content the user engages with on a regular basis. And Instagram pods don’t help you in that department.

The algorithm aims to personalize each user’s feed in an effort to deliver more relevant content. This means that it considers which accounts the user engages with and shows the user more of this content. If the majority of the people engaging with your content are members of your Instagram pod, then most of the people who will see your content consistently are those same Instagram pod users.

Additionally, Instagram pods are unable to account for future algorithm changes. Instagram is always looking for new ways to provide a better experience for their users. This means that they will continue to update their algorithm to provide more relevant and useful content to users through their Instagram feed.

Furthermore, the folks at Instagram are smart. How else would they build such a powerhouse social media platform? This means that they are aware of the actions that users might take to game the algorithm. In response, they will make further updates to the algorithm to penalize those users who are not complying with their regulations. (But more about that in the next section.)

The best way to stay ahead of these Instagram algorithm changes is to stay up-to-date with the latest news and recommendations from the platform itself. Rather than finding ways to get around these algorithm changes, your business should instead find ways to respond to these changes by making improvements to your Instagram marketing strategy. Try to understand how these changes impact your business and work to create effective content and employ an engagement strategy that helps you make the most out of the channel.

4. Shadowbans are a possibility.

If you want to use Instagram to grow your business, you’ve got to follow the social media platform’s rules. As with any activity that aims to get around the platform’s algorithm, joining an Instagram pod can result in a shadowban. A shadowban basically renders your Instagram account invisible, restricting your brand from reaching new people on the platform.

Instagram uses this as a way to filter out accounts that don’t comply with their terms. With a shadowban, your current followers can still see your content. However, it is basically invisible to other users. Additionally, your images won’t appear in hashtag searches, which can significantly impact your reach on the platform.

A shadowban can significantly impact your Instagram engagement rates. This is especially true for small businesses and other accounts that are relatively new or have a small following. If you aren’t able to reach users outside of your follower base then you won’t be able to grow your following and connect with new leads on the platform.

Though joining an Instagram pod will not necessarily result in a shadowban for your profile, there is a possibility that this activity can hurt you. Repetitive liking and commenting from the same small group of users on your content might raise a red flag to Instagram that something is up. Similarly, if you are only commenting and liking the same group of people’s content, this may signal to Instagram that the engagement is not as genuine as it appears.

In our expert opinion, anything that puts your business at risk for losing visibility on Instagram is not worth it. There are plenty of ways to grow your Instagram following without going against Instagram’s terms of service. The same amount of effort that you use to engage with Instagram pod user content could be put toward directly engaging with your target market and building real relationships with your leads.
